6 Bible verses to help you avoid the sin of adultery

We’ve all read and heard of stories of OFWs who’ve fallen victim to the dangers of adultery. Married men and women destroying their marriages and breaking their families apart. Single men and women destroying their lives by being involved with married people. Regardless of the people involved, the effects are the same: broken hearts and tons of regret.

Adultery is something we should all avoid. It destroys more than just marriages – it destroys a person’s life. Such is its danger that the Bible strongly warns every man and woman against it.

Thankfully, God is good. He knows how devastating adultery could be, and so He has given us warnings on how it starts and instructions on how to avoid entering an adulterous relationship. And for those already involved in such an affair, He gives hope for freedom and instructions how to get out.

So without further ado, here are some Bible verses that will help us stay away from adultery.

Abhor sexual lust – Matthew 5:27-30

“”You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.”

Be satisfied with your spouse – Proverbs 5:15-20

“Drink water from your own cistern, and running water from your own well. Should your fountains be dispersed abroad, streams of water in the streets? Let them be only your own, and not for strangers with you. Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice with the wife of your youth. As a loving deer and a graceful doe, let her breasts satisfy you at all times; And always be enraptured with her love. For why should you, my son, be enraptured by an immoral woman, and be embraced in the arms of a seductress?”

God wants us to treat our wives righteously – Malachi 2:13-15

“…You cover the altar of the Lord with tears, with weeping and crying; So He does not regard the offering anymore, nor receive it with goodwill from your hands. Yet you say, “For what reason?” Because the Lord has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, with whom you have dealt treacherously; Yet she is your companion and your wife by covenant. But did He not make them one, having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth.”

Adultery is a highway to destruction – Proverbs 7:21-27

“With her enticing speech she caused him to yield, with her flattering lips she seduced him. Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks, till an arrow struck his liver. As a bird hastens to the snare, he did not know it would cost his life.

“Now therefore, listen to me, my children; Pay attention to the words of my mouth: Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, do not stray into her paths; For she has cast down many wounded, and all who were slain by her were strong men. Her house is the way to hell, descending to the chambers of death.”

Prioritize your marriage – Matthew 19:4-6

“And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.””

Sin brings death – James 1:14-15

“But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.”
