Students will soon enjoy a free ride at MRT-3, LRT-2, PNR starting July 1, 2019

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that students can soon ride for free at some of the country’s main train stations beginning July 1, 2019.

In a press briefing, DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade announced that students can avail of the free rides at the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2), and the Philippine National Railways during select hours every weekdays except holidays.

Eligibility and how to avail?

The department, however, clarified that graduate students – or those taking up Master’s and doctorate degrees— are not qualified for the free train rides.

Technical and vocational students will be eligible for the offer.

Qualified individuals will need to apply for a “Student Free Ride ID.” To get their own cards, students will have to secure and submit identification photos, school identification cards, and certificates of enrolment when they register online.

As authorities are still working on the registration system, students, in the meantime, can show their school IDs when they ride the trains. Student lanes will also be established for the policy’s implementation.
